The Research Priority Area Sustainable Chemistry invites students to participate in an essay competition on the role of chemistry in a sustainable society. The winner will present his or her essay at the Suschem symposium on 10 December and participate in a two-month research project in Chengdu (China) with all travel, accommodation and living expenses covered. The submission deadline is 31 October.

The second and third ranking entries will receive each a prize of €250. All three top entries will be published on the Suschem website.

This essay competition is open to MSc students as well as third-year BSc students from UvA and VU who study chemistry or who are taking a minor in chemistry. Participants must write an essay in English on the role of chemistry in making a more sustainable society, with a concrete example. The essays must fit on 2 A4 pages (including any graphics), and contain a maximum of 1500 words.

Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan province and one of China's major cities.

All eligible entries will be judged for originality and relevance. The judges’ decision is final.

By entering the competition, each participant declares that their essay contains original work only, transfers all copyrights in their essay to the UvA and agrees that the essay can be published by the UvA in open-access format.

Submissions must be sent as PDF attachements only to hims@uva.nl, quoting “Suschem student essay competition” in the subject line.

PDF file, max 2 A4 pages including graphics (total max. 1500 words).

31 October 2015 at 15:00.

Eligible participants:

MSc and third-year BSc students registered at the UvA or at the VU who study chemistry or who are taking a minor in chemistry.

Announcement of results:

The winners will be announced on the Suschem RPA website on November 15, 2015.
