Vidi laureate Tati Fernández appointed at HIMS

28 October 2014

Dr. M.Á. (Tati) Fernández-Ibáñez has been appointed Assistant Professor in the Synthetic Organic Chemistry group at the Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS). She was recently awarded a prestigious Vidi grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

In her research Tati Fernández focuses on the discovery and development of robust sustainable methods for the synthesis of high-value chemicals and materials using the C-H functionalization strategy. The direct and selective functionalization of molecular C-H bonds provides a shortcut in comparison to the traditional synthetic approach, thereby minimizing process costs and waste formation - which are crucial issues in the industrial production.

The research of Tati Fernández complements and extends the existing sustainable chemistry research lines at HIMS. She started  her independent research in 2012 at the Department of Organic Chemistry of the University Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), focusing on C-H functionalization, mechanistic studies and asymmetric catalysis.

Recently Fernández spent a sabbatical period in the group of Prof. Ben Feringa at Groningen University. In the spring of 2014 she was awarded a prestigious Vidi grant from NWO for her project ‘New strategies to sustainable procedures based on metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization’. The Vidi grant enables researchers to further develop their line of research and build their own research group.
